12 Tricks To Get The Best Fruits And Veggies At The Grocery Store

Sometimes we don’t know what we are looking for, and getting the best fruits and veggies at the grocery store can be quite difficult. Have you ever seen someone tapping, sniffing and squeezing the produce while shopping? As strange as it seems, these simple tricks really help us pick out the perfect produce.

In the text bellow, we are going to share with you a list of 12 simple ways how to pick out quality and perfectly ripe fruits and veggies. Besides preventing you from biting into something unpleasant,  this also lowers the level of food waste you produce.

1.      CORN

 

Look at the tassels instead of husking the corn. This is actually the hairy stuff on the top of the corn. Look at and feel the tassels (the hairy stuff). You want tassels that are brown and sticky, rather than dry and black.

2.      PEPPERS

You want firm bell peppers with shiny and wrinkle-free skin. The same rule goes for orange, red, yellow, and green peppers.

3.      EGGPLANT

It is very important to look for eggplant which is relatively heavy and has smooth and shiny skin. You can check if it’s ready to eat just by pushing it with your thumb.  If the eggplant gives a bit and bounces right back, it’s ready to eat. 

4.      BUTTERNUT SQUASH

Any type of winter squash should be firm, with hefty weight, matte skin, dry stem, and nice color.

5.      WATERMELON

The non-green section of the rind of the field spot should be large, dark yellow/ orange since the longer and darker the spit, the longer the fruit ripened on the vine. It means that, your watermelon istastier and juicer.

6.      AVOCADOS

You don’t need to squeeze avocados too hard or too soft. Look at the skin and look for dark-colored avocado. You should check the color of the fruit by removing the top. If the color it dark and brown, don’t eat it. If it is bright and nice, it`s ready to eat.

7.      CUCUMBERS

Look at the color and the texture of the fruit.  It is supposed to look like bee firm, dark green and wrinkle-free.

8.      TOMATOES

They should be beautiful, with deep color and sweet, woody smell.

9.      CANTALOUPE

Nobody likes an overripe cantaloupe. You should always watch out at the weight and the smell ofcantaloupe. Choose the heavy one, with the sweet smell. You can also do a push test too. The fruit is ripe and perfect to eat, if there is a bit of give.

10.  PLUMS

Plums and peaches are stone fruits just like avocados.  You don’t want them to be rock hard, but you also don’t want a mushy, overripe feel. You can do a push test and if there is a little bit of give, this is what you are looking for.

11.  PINEAPPLE

The smell of the pineapple is very important factor when it comes to choosing the right pineapple fruit. It will be ready to eat if it has strong and sweet scent. But, if it smells like vinegar, it is overripe.

12.  STRAWBERRIES

You should always smell the strawberries and look at their skin, if you want to pick the best. If its bruise-free and smells nice, it`s ready to eat.
